Definition of ‘Bounce Rate’

Bounce rate is a metric used in website analytics, normally expressed as a percentage.  A website’s bounce rate is the rate of visitors who land on a page, do nothing, and then leave.  This means they don’t click buttons, visit other pages or fill out forms.  The action of leaving could either be hitting ‘Back’ or closing the tab.

A low bounce rate is generally considered better than a high bounce rate, although a bounce rate of 0% is extremely unlikely and normally indicates an error with the tracking code.

Bounce rate is typically calculated through this formula:

Total number of single page sessions divided by total number of sessions, multiplied by 100

Example

“Our bounce rate is 0% across the whole site … we might have accidentally installed two GA tracking codes.”
